# Preface
This dataset is the 2013 administrative-division data. If you need data from 2014 to 2023, please visit: shengshixian.com (homophone: 省市县, i.e. Province-City-County).
During 2014, China had 24 counties and county-level cities converted into districts, 1 county converted into a county-level city, 8 counties/districts merged into 4 districts, 1 county and 1 district renamed, 6 towns merged into 4 districts, 2 county-level cities newly established, 3 township-level units from 3 county-level units transferred to 3 other county-level units, parts of 4 township-level units from 3 counties transferred to 1 county-level city, 1 district abolished, and 1 prefecture converted into a prefecture-level city.
The 2013 administrative-division data has a reference date of December 31, 2013. By retroactively applying the 2014 changes, the 2013 administrative-division data can be obtained.

# 2013 Administrative-Division Changed Areas
The 2021 and 2022 data are based on the 2020 administrative-division basemap produced earlier, modified in chronological order. Data for years before 2020 must be back-extrapolated, i.e. the 2013 administrative-division data is derived from the 2014 changes for the entire year, not the 2013 changes.
For areas whose administrative boundaries did not change — including counties abolished and set up as districts or county-level cities — only attribute information was updated (including place-name attribute, code attribute, county type attribute, county-code attribute, former-name attribute, and corresponding English attributes). The evolution of Sanya City's administrative divisions is particularly special and complex; a summary is given here:
On May 19, 1984, the State Council approved the abolition of Ya County and the establishment of Sanya City (county-level).
On September 26, 1987, the State Council approved the upgrade of Sanya City to a prefecture-level city, but with no directly-administered county-level units.
On February 11, 2014, the State Council approved the abolition of six towns and the establishment of four new districts in Sanya City: Jiyang District, Tianya District, Haitang District, and Yazhou District.

# 2022–2023 Administrative-Division Data (Xiangxi, Hunan Province)
In March 2022, Jufu Village and Dalong Village of Buchou Township, Huayuan County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, were transferred to the jurisdiction of Aizhai Town, Jishou City.
The 2022 and 2023 administrative-division data were updated based on Hunan Province village-boundary data.
# 2022–2023 Administrative-Division Data (Qitaihe City, Heilongjiang Province)
On August 19, 2022, the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Civil Affairs issued an approval (Hei Min Xing Pi [2022] No. 7) consenting to the establishment of Xingbei Town in Qitaihe City and the transfer of its affiliation from Xinxing District to Qiezihe District: agreed to the establishment of Xingbei Town in Xinxing District, with its affiliation transferred from Xinxing District to Qiezihe District.
The 2022 and 2023 administrative-division data were updated based on the relevant township data.

The 859 Farm, located in Raohe County, Shuangyashan City, Heilongjiang Province, is administered by the Jiansanjiang Sub-bureau of Heilongjiang Provincial Agricultural Reclamation Bureau. The 859 Farm is a state-run farm under the Heilongjiang Provincial Farm Bureau system, subordinated to the Jiansanjiang Farm Administration Bureau.
In previous versions, I had assigned this farm to Fuyuan City based on the county-level data from the National Geomatics Center of China; in this version a data correction was made.
# 2016–2023 Administrative-Division Data Correction (Huai'an City, Jiangsu Province)
Nanmachang Subdistrict is a subdistrict under the jurisdiction of Qingjiangpu District, Huai'an City, Jiangsu Province. Nanmachang Subdistrict was formerly Nanmachang Township before 2018, and was established as Nanmachang Subdistrict in 2018, with the area of the former Nanmachang Township becoming the administrative area of Nanmachang Subdistrict.
Nanmachang Township was originally a township under Qinghe District. In 2016, Qinghe District of Huai'an City was abolished and Qingjiangpu District of Huai'an City was established; Nanmachang Township was merged into Qingjiangpu District.
In previous versions of the 2016–2023 administrative-division data, Nanmachang Township had been incorrectly assigned to Huai'an District; in this version this error in Qingjiangpu District was corrected.
# 2014–2023 Administrative-Division Data Correction (Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province)
Songzhuang Town and Dunshang Town belonged to Ganyu District of Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province, from 2013 to 2023. In previous versions of the data, parts of Songzhuang Town and Dunshang Town had been assigned to Lianyun District.
In this version of the 2013–2023 year-by-year administrative-division data, the above errors have been corrected.
# 2014–2023 Administrative-Division Data Correction (Aba, Sichuan Province)
In Zamtang County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, there was an exclave of Serda (Seda) County in previous versions of the data. After consulting numerous administrative-division references and information, this exclave is located within the territory of Sekog Town, Seda County, and should belong to Seda County.
In this version of the 2013–2023 administrative-division data, the exclave error has been corrected.
# 2014–2023 Administrative-Division Data Correction (Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region)
Pingzhuang Town of Yuanbaoshan District, Chifeng City, had no administrative-division changes from 2013 to 2023. In previous versions of the data, the eastern part of Pingzhuang Town was not included in Yuanbaoshan District.
In this version of the 2013–2023 administrative-division data, the administrative-division error in Yuanbaoshan District of Chifeng City has been corrected.
# 2013–2023 Administrative-Division Data Correction (Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province)
Mazengyiwu Township was originally subordinate to Zhaojue County, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. In December 2019, Mazengyiwu Township of Zhaojue County was abolished and its administrative area was transferred to the jurisdiction of Daxing Township, Xichang City.
Donghe Township was originally subordinate to Xide County, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. In December 2019, Donghe Township of Xide County was abolished and its administrative area was transferred to the jurisdiction of Chuanxing Town, Xichang City.
Pushi Township was originally subordinate to Zhaojue County, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. In December 2019, Pushi Township of Zhaojue County was abolished and its administrative area was transferred to the jurisdiction of Chuanxing Town, Xichang City.

In previous versions, the jurisdictions of the three townships were incorrect. In this version of the 2013–2023 administrative-division data, boundary corrections were made to the county-level data involving the three townships.
# 2014–2016 Administrative-Division Data Correction (Maoming City, Guangdong Province)
Yangjiao Town is currently a township-level administrative unit under the jurisdiction of Maonan District, Maoming City, Guangdong Province.
Yangjiao Town was established in 1987 and was subordinate to Dianbai County (today's Dianbai District) of Maoming City. On January 22, 2001, it was transferred to the newly established Maogang District of Maoming City. On February 17, 2014, it came under the jurisdiction of the Dianbai District formed by the merger of Maogang District and Dianbai County. On September 18, 2017, Yangjiao Town was once again transferred to the jurisdiction of Maonan District.
According to the administrative-division change history, from 2014 to 2016, Yangjiao Town should be under the jurisdiction of Dianbai District; in this version, a correction was made to the 2014–2016 administrative-division data.
