# Administrative Division Changes in Early 2018
The 2021 and 2022 datasets are based on the 2020 administrative division basemap and are modified chronologically. Data before 2020, however, must be reconstructed retroactively — that is, the early 2018 administrative division data is referenced against the changes made throughout the year 2018, not the 2017 changes.
First, areas where administrative boundaries were not changed — including counties being abolished to become districts or county-level cities — primarily involve updates to attribute information (including place name, division code, county type, county code, former name attributes, and the corresponding English attributes). These are not all illustrated with maps; the main attribute updates are listed in the text.
Then, areas with boundary changes were updated by referencing the National Fundamental Geographic Information 2015 administrative divisions (currency 2012), the National Fundamental Geographic Information 2021 administrative divisions (currency 2019), the Ministry of Civil Affairs 2018 division data, and the 2013 administrative division data (no source).

As of January 1, 2018, China has a total of 334 prefecture-level units, comprising 294 prefecture-level cities, 7 prefectures, 30 autonomous prefectures, and 3 leagues. In addition, 36 vector features are not included in the statistics (e.g., municipalities such as Beijing, SARs such as Macao, and province-directly-governed counties such as Ding'an County).
# County-Level Type Display
As of January 1, 2018, China has a total of 2,862 county-level units, comprising 1,354 counties, 364 county-level cities, 964 municipal districts, 117 autonomous counties, 49 banners, 3 autonomous banners, 1 special district, and 1 forestry area. In addition, 9 vector features are not included in the county-level category statistics (e.g., the SAR Hong Kong, and prefecture-level cities without county-level units such as Zhongshan City and Dongguan City).
